Identified by the American Society of Civil Engineers as a key component of project design, subsurface utility services include locating, designating and subsurface utility locations exhibits underground utility structures to provide clear, reliable data on the exact location of existing utilities lines within a given project area.  Accumark proudly serves city and county utility owners, federal agencies, and several professional engineering and design firms with cost effective, professional services on large and small projects.

Route 29 Improvements, Charlottesville, VA
In 2014 and 2015, Accumark provided Quality Level B Utility Designating and Mapping Services along Route 29 in Charlottesville for this Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) project. The project corridor stretched over 6.5 miles and Accumark designated over 295,000 linear feet of underground utilities. Accumark surveyed more than 175 manholes as well as over 2300 utility structures. The project involved a very aggressive timeline and delivery date. Accumark assigned multiple field crews to work throughout the duration of the project, which included rotating crews to work on weekends. Accumark was able to meet the delivery date set out by VDOT while keeping the project on budget.

I-64 Capacity Improvements, Segment 1 Design/Build, Newport News, VA
In 2015, Accumark provided Quality Level B Utility Designating and Mapping Services as a member of the design/build team for this Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Project. The purpose of the project is to provide immediate congestion relief to the corridor and includes a new 12 foot wide travel lane and a 12 foot wide shoulder in each direction. The project corridor is 5.6 miles and Accumark designated all existing underground utilities along this corridor and at key intersections. Accumark field located the utility marks by conventional survey and mapped them. Accumark utilized multiple crews to complete the project under the timeline desired by the design/build team.

GRTC Pulse (BRT) Project, Richmond, VA
In 2015, Accumark provided Quality Level B Utility Designating and Mapping Services for this transportation. The project is for the design and construction of new bus lanes which will allow customers to move along the Broad Street Corridor in Richmond at a much faster rate. The Pulse will provide frequent, reliable transit service that allows a greater movement of people along a corridor without depending solely on cars and parking.  Accumark performed thorough research of utility records at the initial phases of the project. Accumark then horizontally designated underground utilities at various locations from I-195 to Rocketts Landing. Accumark field located all utility paint through conventional survey and mapped the utilities in AutoCAD. At the conclusion of the project, Accumark performed thorough QA / QC in the field as well as in the office. Accumark will provide utility test hole services during phase 2 of this project.

Dulles Metrorail Silver Line, Phase 2, Loudoun County, VA
Accumark provided Quality Level B Utility Designating Services and Quality Level A Utility Locating Services for Phase 2 of the Dulles Metrorail Silver Line. Accumark designated and mapped over 60,000 L.F. of underground utilities within the project corridor. Accumark also provided utility test hole services by way of vacuum excavation at over 300 locations of utility conflict. The project involves an over 11 mile extension of the DC Metro from Dulles Airport into Loudoun County. Accumark worked on this project for several months.

Rt. 603 – Montgomery County, VA
For this road improvement project, Accumark performed Quality Level B Utility Designating Services along Route 603 in Montgomery County. Accumark designated over 44,500 L.F. of underground utilities including: water, gas, sanitary force mains, telephone, fiber-optics, electric, and storm drains. A two-man blind sweep allowed Accumark’s field crew to successfully locate a large storm drain which was absent from the survey, due to both ends of the drain being obscured by brush. Without attention to detail and thorough investigations, the field crew would not have picked up this storm drain.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was also used to locate multiple water lines as well as a sanitary force main. Accumark provided traffic control for this project due to poor sight distance and limited visibility.

This work was performed under Accumark’s current contract with VDOT for design projects.

Rt. 360 – Halifax County, VA
For this project, Accumark performed Quality Level A Utility Locating Services at 22 locations along Route 360 in Halifax County for a bridge improvement project. The 22 test holes were performed on telephone, sewer, and water lines, as well as unknown utilities that were discovered during the designating process.

Accumark’s field crews faced a great challenge due to the fact that most of the test holes were to be performed on a non-locatable plastic water main. Because of this, Accumark brought in one of its Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) units to aid in the test hole set-up. The GPR successfully located the water main, allowing the field crew to perform all test holes to the client’s satisfaction.

Accumark also provided traffic control which included the use of signs, cones, arrow boards, and Accumark’s own Crash Truck.

Rt. 6 – Fluvanna County, VA
Accumark performed Quality Level B Utility Designating Services along Route 6 in Fluvanna County. For this road improvement project, Accumark designated over 10,500 L.F. of underground utilities. The utilities designated for this project included electric, telephone, and a very important cross-country fiber-optic line. It was critical for Accumark to identify the utility owners of this fiber-optic line to ensure the protection of it.

Most utilities on this project ran through easements away from the road which caused the field crew to cut through a large amount of brush. This created a challenge for Accumark’s field crew, but it was the necessary step that had to be taken so that the job would be completed to the satisfaction of the client.

This work was performed under Accumark’s current contract with VDOT for design projects.
