What is subsurface utility designation and mapping?
We typically work with:
It is using the data accumulated from existing records and maps, combined with an in-depth site investigation, to identify the horizontal locations of existing buried utilities and structures. The site investigation includes a visual inspection of above ground utility features such as man-holes and valve boxes, coupled with the use of electronic utility locating equipment, to aid in the detection of subsurface structures.
Findings from the site investigation are correlated with the often times inexact data collected from records and maps to help determine the existence and approximate location of below ground utilities.

Accumark’s SUE Process
Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) saves money, promotes safety, and prevents damage to existing underground utility infrastructure.
This is a high-level outline of our process:
- Identify and contact possible utility owners within the project limits.
- Perform a thorough investigation of all available records, plans, and maps.
- Conduct a visual site inspection of all above ground utility features.
- Perform an electronic search of the site to identify approximate location of buried utilities and metallic structures or objects.
- Mark all locatable utilities with paint markings based on APWA Uniform Color Codes.
- Complete all mapping and field notes of the location, direction, and configuration of utilities.
- Send final deliverable(s) in the form of an AutoCAD or MicroStation file.
